5 Signs It's Time to Switch Your Office Cleaning Company
May 2026
Switching cleaning contractors is a hassle nobody wants. Re-tendering, briefing a new team, the disruption — facilities managers usually put it off as long as possible. But sometimes putting it off costs more than the switch itself.
Here are five signs that suggest it's time to start looking.
1. Inconsistent standards
One day the office looks great. The next day desks haven't been wiped, bins are half-emptied and the kitchen sink is still full from yesterday. Inconsistency is the single most common complaint we hear from clients who've switched to Nuclean. It usually points to one of two problems: high staff turnover at the contractor, or no real quality control between visits.
2. Staff turnover you can see
If you're seeing a different cleaner every other week, you've got a problem. Good cleaning depends on knowing the building — where the difficult spots are, what the standards are, what the priorities are. Constant rotation means constant retraining, which means the standard never settles. It's also a strong signal that the contractor isn't paying or treating their staff well enough to keep them.
3. No communication
When was the last time your contractor proactively contacted you? If the answer is "when they sent the invoice", that's a problem. A good contractor brings issues to you before you notice them — broken equipment, supply shortages, staffing changes, scope creep. Silence usually means nobody's paying attention.
4. No quality audits
You shouldn't be the quality control system. A serious contractor runs regular audits, documents them, and shares the results with you. If you've never seen an audit report, you don't have a quality programme — you have hope.
5. Billing surprises
"Extra" cleans being added to invoices. Consumables priced higher than agreed. Hours that don't match what was contracted. If you find yourself querying invoices regularly, the relationship has already broken down. Switch.
What to look for in a replacement
Ask any new contractor to walk you through their quality audit process, their staff turnover rate, and their typical response time to issues. The answers tell you everything.
